JOURNALISM

The Social-Professional Portrait of Romanian Journalists
Natalia VASILENDIUC, University of Bucharest, Romania

Abstract
This article represents one of the chapters of the qualitative study “The Professional Culture of the Romanian Journalists”. It was implemented on a sample of fifty one Romanian practitioners from forty mass media institutions, from February until April 2009. The research conclusions consist in the fact that journalists from Romania are still in a process of assimilation of the Western professional norms. Although the journalists consider themselves as watchdogs, teachers who educate the public, opinion makers and defenders of the rights and freedoms of the individuals, and appreciate professional values like objectivity, correctness, impartiality, honesty and professionalism, journalists occasionally use dubious work methods and, often break ethical principles. The results of the research prove that the present generation is heterogeneous, mobile, pragmatic, professionally un-associated, represented also by many unqualified individuals, who try to promote Western press values, and detach themselves from any involvement or political affiliation.

Key words:Romanian journalists, incomes, gender factor, professional motivations, political and organizational affiliations.

Communication and migrants in Europe. The case of Romanian migrants images in Romanian media
Valentina MARINESCU, University of Bucharest, Romania

Abstract
The purpose of the present article is to offer a few spots concerning the impact generated by the phenomenon of the Romanian communities going abroad for work, on the Romanian media (as part of the local media public space).
The research question to which the article tried to find an answer was: “Is there any influence exerted by the phenomenon of the diasporal public on the media agenda and journalistic practices?” The sample studied in the present article was composed of articles published on the topic of the Romanian work force migration in the countries of the European Union in the intervals January 29- February 23 and April 6-22 in four main newspapers: Cotidianul (The Daily Newspaper), Adevărul (The Truth), Jurnalul Naţional (National Journal) and Evenimentul Zilei (The Event of the Day). The methodology of studying the data set was based on the methodological “triangulation” both at the qualitative and quantitative levels of sociological analysis.
The data analysis showed that even at a minimal level of comparison between periods of time, the journalistic routine procedures were influenced not only by the topic in itself (the issue of the Romanian immigrants in the European Union) but especially by its preeminence in a given period.

Keywords: mass media, migrant communities, reconstruction of social identity.

Abstract:
Online since 1995, the French newspaper of record Le Monde started hosting blogs in October 2004. Thriving to better adapt to the internet, the newspaper has been on the lookout for added value via multimedia, forums, chats, and blogs that have been giving rhythm to the evolution of online press over the past fifteen years. The contradiction we felt when the paper of record started including personal notes from random sources (that of journalists, experts and site subscribers) is the reason for our ongoing doctorate in Sciences de l’Information et de la Communication. We mainly focus on the suggested interrelation: that of a journalism considered as “traditional”, and that of the internet, a media strongly conveyed by a technicist ideology. In this paper, we will firstly question the ambiguity, diversity and plurality that dominate inside the press company when it comes to dealing with the blog platform. We will then summon anthropologist V. W. Turner’s concept of liminality in a thrive to better understand the hidden issues at stake for Le Monde.fr in it’s thrive to develop online. The blog plat-form may well be just that: a place in which the newspaper plays a tactical acculturation to the internet.

Dana POPESCU- JOURDY & Elisabeth VERCHER, Université Lyon 2, France

Abstract:
Our research questions the practices and discourses build by firms in the area of solidarity. It fits into a wider reflection inside a work about the paradigm of solidarity and the specifics of what we call the solidary communication. The question here is in which way a company that develops some projects and values in the domain of solidarity can generate new forms of rationalization of the actions in solidarity and humanitarian field (in the Weberian sense), and also new relationships between ethics and economics. We believe that this form of rationality is a framework / pattern that will define specific practices of communication. In the field of organization communication, our research work focuses on several French firms well known in Romania (Carrefour, Renault, Société Générale). Our work aims to articulate two levels of analyze: first, the firm business strategy and the speeches linked with it and second, communicational staging of solidarity concept.
The particularity of these “solidary companies” – in their practices and discourses - is that they seem to follow a specific model of mediation built around the paradigm of solidarity. In this model, the logic of construction and collective commitment is meant to go with or to replace, at least partially, the logic of competition which characterizes usually the economic activity.

The image of the public institutions and new technologies
Cristina COMAN & Mihaela PĂUN, University of Bucharest, Romania

Abstract
During the recent past decades, a new technology and a new kind of media emerged: the social media. It created a huge communication area that houses the interactions and debate between creators of social images and messages. In public relations, the emergence of social media challenges the traditional instruments of government public relations. Responding to development of information and communication technology (ICT), social media is considered as an alternative communication channel of government public relations efforts.
Public relations practitioners make choices every day about how to relate to different publics in different situations. Nowadays they perceive social media (e.g., blogs) to be a normal part of their organization.
This article presents the challenges and opportunities of social media for public institutions and argues that the designing and implementing government public relations using social media involves more than merely having another communicational channel for publics. In this paper, we conclude that social media are an alternative instrument to encourage a two-way communication channel between government and publics.

ADVERTISING

Advertising and Post-Decembrist Popular Culture in Romania
Mădălina MORARU, University of Bucharest, Romania

Abstract
During the last 20 years, Romanian Advertising often paid attention to the popular culture features developed in Communism, because they are the ones that reflect consumers’ lifestyles, profiles and values still alive in our society. It is captivating to notice how many brands took advantages from this return (the eternal coming back to the past) and how varied the creative strategies of some commercials could be. Some interesting categories of products, which describe the old epoch very well, could be analyzed according to the brand history and its positioning.  Consequently, national brands are focusing on loyalty, relationship with the consumer and the conformation/adaptation process to the new political and economic background. Moreover, popular culture was very well exploited through some aspects often met in the commercial script such as: specific jobs, symbols, special chromatic (the red signature), spatial and temporal elements, humor and irony, and linguistic characteristic as well.
From the positioning point of view, most commercials are focusing on the consumer’s identity so that they could build the best connection with the products they need. The integrative advertising is the dominant type resulted from our research and it reflects beyond any doubt the way the customer tries to be accepted by a social group according falling into certain categories: age, gender, profession. We could even identify some profiles in our samples such as: the non-conformist, the teenager, the housewife, the beggar and, many times, the “pater familias” (the father of the family).
To sum up, the Romanian advertising borrowed a set of values promoted by the Ceausescu time, but everything in a very creative way and, most importantly, on certain purpose. The nowadays commercials try to reach the target better, taking always into account their mentality and keeping the consumers’ ideas alive, but everything being highly creatively done. For this reason, the influence of popular culture is dynamic and spots progressively bring to the light the transformations of the new consumption society.

Zussamenfassung:

Abstract
The SMS (Short Message Service) has become a phenomenon which comprises diverse public reactions. Different attitudes contribute creating multiple representations of this phenomenon (the mass-media, teachers, TV shows or specific websites). The SMS becomes a culture formed by very different uses to its numerous and diverse users. We think that the SMS passed over its initial functions, those of communication and socialization, becoming a frame for creativity and artistic innovation.

Keywords: object of production; appropriation; re-appropriation; communication; usage; users.
