Romanian Journal of Journalism and Communication, issue 4 (46), year IX (XIII), 2014

section: Journalism

pages: 16-24

abstract

abstract (second language):

The journalistic profession is an important pillar of a society given to its eminently democratic aims. The new media centrality in the occidental societies and the transformations of socioeconomic context of the press modify the working conditions and how journalism is apprehended. This article attempts to highlight how journalism in Britain and France is considered by defining a paradigmatic duality between the notion of Public Interest applied to the journalistic field and the expression of the interest of the public. Whether the work of definition allows emphasizing two distinctive worlds of sense, between civic role of journalism in democracy and pragmatic approach of adjustment to consumers supposed expectations, issues underlying these two paradigms refer to changing validation patterns and an investment of business logic at the expense of the democratic legitimacy of journalism that require to reconsider the social responsibility of the media and journalists.
