Romanian Journal of Journalism and Communication, issue 4 (33), year V (VIII), 2010

section: Journalism

pages: 15-26

abstract

The purpose of the present article is to offer a few spots concerning the impact generated by the phenomenon of the Romanian communities going abroad for work, on the Romanian media (as part of the local media public space). The research question to which the article tried to find an answer was: “Is there any influence exerted by the phenomenon of the diasporal public on the media agenda and journalistic practices?” The sample studied in the present article was composed of articles published on the topic of the Romanian work force migration in the countries of the European Union in the intervals January 29- February 23 and April 6-22 in four main newspapers: Cotidianul (The Daily Newspaper), Adevãrul (The Truth), Jurnalul Naþional (National Journal) and Evenimentul Zilei (The Event of the Day). The methodology of studying the data set was based on the methodological “triangulation” both at the qualitative and quantitative levels of sociological analysis. The data analysis showed that even at a minimal level of comparison between periods of time, the journalistic routine procedures were influenced not only by the topic in itself (the issue of the Romanian immigrants in the European Union) but especially by its preeminence in a given period.
